I'm in Japan this week, and had a chance to experience Nissan's Advanced Technology Center in Japan. They showed us a car that detects alcohol in the air, on your breath, and in your sweat, and won't let you drive until you sober up. The car can also detect inattentive driving or when you're becoming sleepy, attempt to wake you up or get your attention back on the road, and get you off the road as soon as possible.

Nissan also showed us their Safety Pedal, which detects when you're coming up to a car too fast and automatically hits the brakes. They called the detection their "magic bumper." Cool.

This is a neat idea! I worry about the alcohol detection device a little bit: If the intoxicated person is in the passenger seat, can it pick up on his breath, or simply the driver's? Also, what if human error is really evasive action, like avoiding hitting a squirrel in the road? In addition, I too wear my sunglasses at night.

Good enough for me, just have to wait a couple of years until it is on everycar. That's if the government approves of it...

I think thats such a great idea!! It always amuses me in a bad way that bars have parking lots...if your not supposed to drink and drive....

WOW!! I can't believe the technology presented here! I agree with the first post above ^
hopefully a vehicle like such won't cost too much so that it can be incorporated into other, if not, all cars. I know when I'm on the way home from work I can get a little tired, so it would be amazing to know that my car would detect and wake me up in the case that I would doze off too much while driving. Big thanks to Nissan!!

That's a great idea. It'll will help keep imapired drivers off the road. However hopefully it won't be to expensive so that it can be incorporated into all makes and models of cars.

I'm not so sure that this is the solution to many a problem we have with human error at the wheel. It does, don't get me wrong, look pretty cool at first... but this add is lacking evidence and support on the new bells and whistles for this car and its drawbacks (and not only the positive effects the vehicle presents). I would like to see some believable pathos, logos, and ethos before hopping on the band wagon.

I really like this idea. It's about time that the car companies came up with something that will prevent driving impaired. I think it would be amazing if they could eventually make the alcohol detection a standard in all vehicles.

It will be exciting to see how this technology develops and is accepted.

This is really awesome!  This has the potential to save thousands of lives every year!!!  Now, if only people will buy it......we'll see.  Great idea and I wish more automakers would follow suit.

That's great, if this technology makes it's way to the US, it should be a requirement in all cars.

This is really cool they need to bring this technology to America.  It will really help!

Wow! haha thats possibly the coolest safety technology i have ever seen on a car.  Just think if it was feasible to put this in every car.  It would save so many lives!
