This is not an article, i just wanted to share a story of my friend's

He was driving his little brother, only a week after he got his license and he was driving in front of his two friends on a country road, he was not speeding, but it had been raining all day, and he started to hydroplane, lost control of his car, freaked out and accidentally hit the gas pedal, flew off the road, and slammed into a ditch.  He totaled his car, was not hurt, and neither was his brother, they were both wearing seat belts, and it helped them not get hurt

just another example on why to drive save, and wear seat belts

Common sense used there. shows why such a simple device such as the seatbelt is so effective.

its good he and his brother was wearing their seat belts. This is a good example to prove what seat belts do. Everytime I get in the car either if its to drive myself or just be a passenger I put the seat belt on right away and I try to make sure everyone else does. I try to be protective of the others in my car or who I'm riding with. We all have fun filled lives ahead.

According to an article from Arizona State University's website, the following shows the tragic irony for those who don't want to wear a seatbelt.

Tragic lesson. An anti-seat belt advocate died in a motor vehicle crash...because he wasn't buckled up. Derek Kieper, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, had submitted an editorial to the Daily Nebraskan in September entitled "Individual rights buckle under seat belt laws." In the article he said "Uncle Sam is not here to regulate every facet of life no matter what the consequences." An article in the January 4, 2005 Lincoln Journal Star reported that Mr. Kieper not only died in a car crash, but the tragic mishap that claimed his life was the very type of accident in which seat belts have proved so effective in saving lives - preventing passengers from being ejected from vehicles. The article noted that Kieper died when the Ford Explorer he was a passenger in traveled off an icy section of Interstate 80 and rolled several times in a ditch. Kieper, who was riding in the back seat of the Explorer, was ejected from the vehicle. Two others in the vehicle, including the driver and the front-seat passenger, who were wearing safety belts, sustained non-life threatening injuries. Derek was not wearing a seat belt. This is an example of what can happen to an inexperienced driver.  He wasn't speeding, just minding his own business, and he hydroplanes and loses control.  This is how fast something can (and will) happen.  I'm so glad that neither one of them were hurt and that can be contributed to wearing their seat belts!!!

An excellent reason for graduated driver licensing.  More driving experience with adults in the vehicle could have helped this.

I think seatbelts always help.  As soon as I get into my car, i put my seatbelt on.. then I start my car.  I think seatbelts are what prevents people from getting extremely hurt in car accidents.

Thanks for sharing this Doug!  Great example of why "buckling up" makes a difference!
